I was quite proud of myself the other day. Another employee was asking me the sort of mindlessly annoying questions that nosy people do when they think they can get away with it. 'How old are you?'
'Are you married?'
'Any kids?'
"Can I stab a fork through your eye?" is what I wanted to ask her. Instead, when she made the mistake of asking if I minded her asking me these things, I lied through my teeth and asked if I could ask her something. She nods yes, and I didn't get to see her expression because I was in the middle of dealing with a customer. Yes, while she was asking me stupid annoying questions. Like I wasn't working at all.
"What is the point of asking someone all these questions when it's obvious they don't want to talk? Are you trying to be rude, or make me talk, or what? Because I don't understand."
Well. It was actually a pretty civil conversation after that, I think mostly because I didn't let go of the initiative once I'd gotten it. I kept at her until I'd gotten her to tell me why she was harrasing me me (or at least she picked a reason in hopes of shutting me up, ha) which would be that I - the poor shy individual - clearly needed her help coming out of my shell.
Gag.
Seriously. Just because I am shy doesn't mean I don't have a backbone, just that maybe I don't exercise it enough. It sure as hell doesn't mean that I don't have a personality, that you can just ask me stupid malicious questions to have someone to look down on. Asking me if I had kids after she asked if I was married? And I told her no? There is no positive connotation after that, she was looking for something to look down on me about. Bitch.
I did not actually say any of that. I pointed out that it was counterproductive, since being pushed to talk tends to make people clam up more.
After all - she certainly got quieter after I started pushing her to answer my questions. *smug*
