Not half what it needs to be, as I haven't got to them getting around the youjakai, but. ^_^

~You wouldn't be objecting to my speaking if you knew I could give you answers, now would you? If you knew that I could tell you something about that new plaything of yours?~

"W-" Ryou flinched, mentally kicking himself for even responding to the voice. "What do you mean, tell me something?" He flipped a page, eyes caught by the word 'Taulagi'. Yes. There had been something like that on her computer.. "And it is not a plaything! I'm studying it, that's all."

~Oh, only that I've seen something like this before. Not very often, but the occasional trader would have something worth stealing, you know.~ A pause, hardly enough for Ryou to draw a breath, and then ~It can be used to amplify certain energies...~

It was too eager. Probably hiding something. "You're lying to me, aren't you?" Ryou muttered, still flipping through the book. An African tribe... and there would have been trading with Egypt, yes.

~Now, yadonushi... why would I do that? You asked me a question and I answered it, that's all.~

"I did not ask you. You heard me thinking about it." Ryou frowned. "And I wish you'd stop listening to me think."

~Oh now that's not fair, yadonushi. Making wishes you know I can't grant.~

He could hear the voice laughing as he slammed the book shut and and got up to replace it with another.

He sighed. Stared at the books as he tried to think which one to check next. "Now look. Just because you want me to think it has something to do with this," he tapped the Ring for emphasis, to make sure the voice couldn't misinterprete that as well, "doesn't mean I'm going to listen to you. I just... I just want to know, is all." He waited for a moment, but heard no response.

Days of absolute boredom and school, and tension at home. During which time he might have actually spoken to his Father twice, and both times he kept mentioning the Yagyu woman. It had actually slightly gotten on Ryou's nerves, but it really hadn't been going on long enough for the embarrasment to grow into anything stronger. Nevermind that he suspected Father didn't have a chance with her.

Days of listening to the voice taunt him with little pieces of information, while he studied after he got home.

But he had an idea, now. A plan of sorts. Starting with that nine-pointed star he'd seen when Father first dragged him along to meet Professor Yagyu, dredging up bits of knowledge from here and there. Candles for each point on the star, which he lit carefully before he turned to the table where he'd laid the crystal. He supressed the brief flicker of worry that the candles might burn out of control. There was only one thing he needed to worry about, and that had not spoken to him today.

"Well." He'd said it loudly enough, he ought to have gotten some response - but nothing. Frowning, he snatched the crystal off the table. "If I can't learn anything else this way, there's only one thing left to do, isn't there?" He meant it to provoke the voice, a little. To make it tell him something more. But the only response he got sounded almost lazy. As if it were only half-paying attention.

~Careful, my host. Don't get caught up in things that are too much for you.~

Frowning, he stepped into the circle. Held the crystal in the same hand as the knife, and at an angle to it, and carefully cut into his own palm. He hadn't meant to react at all, but he couldn't help wincing, and hearing the voice laugh only made it worse. And now, now he could feel it paying attention. Watching too closely, as if it meant to memorize exactly what he was doing.

Swallowing, he shoved back the urge to lick the damn knife. He knew that impluse was none of his own. He snapped the knife shut instead, and pressed the crystal between both hands as he began to speak. The room faded.

Into a red ...door? No, a gate. He couldn't stop and look at it, he didn't dare stop this halfway through with no real idea what he was doing. He shut his eyes tightly as the world went cold, and black.
