I found this, which I had started during NaNo...

Saw the full moon still out this morning as I left work, with clouds under it that seemed almost painted on. Someone using the sky for a canvas, who'd been dreaming about fire... they were these puffs, like smoke escaping from some pocket in the fire? Only hanging there in still motion. Then some of the birds in the parking lot flocked off, and it was like something out of an anime, a path of wings leading to the moon.

Started me thinking about a book I'd read as a kid.. and I can't remember how old I was. Middle school? Younger, maybe... there were these two girls. One of them had the perfect storybook home, I seem to remember the phrase 'manicured lawn' being used. Which always make me think of someone having to cut the grass with nail clippers. Seriously - once I took a pair and started trying to cut grass with them because I was curious - how long would this take? And wouldn't the grass keep growing? I had ...some idea about seeing if the grass would have grown back where I started, by the time I got to the other end of the yard?

I never did find out, because ya know. I got caught. Who knew grass would ruin nail clippers? ^^;;

But. Pink-princessy-perfect home! Roses in the garden even. The kind of house I think my parents wanted us to have.

The other one was trashy. Like one of those overgrown abandoned houses, all mysterious and sure to have interesting things in them if you can stand the spiders and other assorted crawlies? Only it hadn't gone quite that far, and there were people living in it... I think part of it is that the pov stayed with the 'good girl' and to her, any sort of decay just looked that much worse set against her home? But junk in the yard and everything - and she was curious about this other girl from school - I think she was had noticed that this girl didn't seem to have parents. As far as she could work out, the girl was living all by herself and how did she manage things with no adult to take care of her? :o sort of reaction.

But also she was curious about the differances, and I think, in the process of her investigation and trying to make friends... at some point there comes this conversation about magic. And the good girl is thinking of her own lawn, with the perfect grass and the beautiful roses and everything Just. So. And the other scorns it, telling her that magic needs room to grow and be wild, and part of the beauty lies in what she thinks are the ugly things. Something like that, at any rate.

Good girl doesn't believe her, but she starts paying attention to things, and I think this is near the end of the book? That she's poking around near the backs of the houses and spies on the other girl. Having a sort of carnival with the elves, and there is a tiny ferris wheel - I've forgotten most of this, but bascially it was the most magical thing she had ever seen, and it was all like folk-art stuff made out of junk that they were playing with, and eating berries that she knew came from 'weeds' and maybe were poisonous to humans... and the other girl saw her and smiled. A tiny secret smile.

And of course. Not long after that Social Services or something very like it had caught on, and she had to leave - and the good girl was so upset, thinking it was her fault. Which it might have been? I don't remember if she had done any concerned-babbling to her parents. The other girl was telling her it was okay, sort of. In that she was used to this, and she had to keep moving to take care of the elves, because that was her responsiblity. But that she wanted her friend to remember what they had talked about, to remember the elves and not forget about magic and what magic really is. And where to find it.

A side note to all that, and another part of what actually got me started on thinking about all that - funny you should call them mushrooms, Shusu. ;p

ETA: It is both amusing and annoying that I can't seem to write for the NaNo - yet I can make dolls for them. And get catcalls, wolf-whistles and comments of a related nature from the entire cast thereof. >:p *threatens to set fire to the peanut gallery* ... either that, or set Bakura loose on them. 'Yes, you want to collect souls? Start with the loud mouths thataway!'
