Hello Dear Writer,
And I am deeply sorry this letter is so late. I truly thought I posted one, but something must have happened. (I hope that was not one of those super realistic dreams.)
So, general likes: found family, world building, plotty stories.
The White Duck Seriously, if you expect royalty to be able to just undo magic, apparently out of their innate royal-ness, why would any self respecting witch ever mess with them? I mean this isn't the only story I've seen where this happens, but it sticks in this one for some reason, possibly because we're given no reason to believe the prince can do anything of the sort until he does.
Which brings me to the way it seems somehow connected to birds, like. Obviously my wife is now a duck! And equally obviously, we need birds to bring us magic healing waters to save our sons, who are ducks, why wouldn't they be? XD Has this happened before? Is there some history of duck nobility? And where are they finding the magic water, and why does there need to be two kinds?!
Yuki-onna I really love the versions of this story where she just lives with the man, until he has to be a moron and name her. It's like an inversion of the selkie stories where the jerk steals her coat - instead yuki-onna gives him her name, in a sense, and he can keep her until he speaks it. And she's so angry when he does, because she's losing their life together. :(
Jorogumo This one I don't have as much to say about, but would be equally thrilled with - I really love spiders, okay? Okay! I am still looking for the version of this story involving the spider being in a temple and a samurai having to get her out. I could swear it was something like the boy who could draw cats, too.
The Stolen Child - William Butler Yeats This one there's also not as much to say, but it's a lovely poem and a chilling story. I've always thought the kid chooses to leave, and I kind of wonder why and kind of don't want to know? It's all too easy to imagine any number of reasons a kid would run off with the fairies, after all, and some of them would be very good ones.
