Mar. 3rd, 2005 08:48 pmThe Plan: Get up at one, get online to double-check directions, head to the Zoo!
What Happened: Being unable to sleep except in snatches that all seemed to involve some incredibly bizzare HP dream. << I mean... Hogwarts being relocated to what really seemed like a fairytale-version of my neighborhood (read = muchmuch cooler than this place will ever actually be) and they brought thier snow with them! :D Snooow, there was snow and I suspect I didn't pay enough attention to what else was going on.
Because, you know. Snow! Everywhere! *.*
And vauge images of a potions class gone awry, and Malfoy spying and Hermione... she was getting really really annoyed about something. At one point, I seem to remember her hitting either Ron or Harry with a book. <<; And Dumbledore trying to deal with what I swear was the Invasion of Possessed Light Fixtures. Really. Very dramatic image of him shoving Harry out of the way so a pair of floating car-headlights, minus the car, could not blast him, and then returning fire with his wand. And throwing himself away from the resulting explosion. >>
It was just very, very strange.
>> And it just occurs to me to suspect that Arthur Weasley might be behind this. << *suspicious*
I woke up! ^^; About 12:45, at which point I decided forget it, and tried to get online to see about the directions. Only to learn from my little brother that something was wrong with aol, whereiin it would not connect properly. And kept insisting it was the modem, which had been changed. After a bit I just gave up, printed the directions I already had, and crossed my fingers as far as being able to read them went.
It went okay, though? Except I intended to use the non-highway directions, could not find a road listed in them, and turned around to go onto the highway. ^^ And it only took me ten minutes longer than the directions said I needed! :P
First of all, it was rainy and overcast, and most of the bigger animals were curled up asleep? Secondly, the Zoo is beautiful. They've gotten some of the new enclosures build since the last time I was there, and it's just. Gorgeous. I know they were being taken care of and, you could almost always see someone moving around behind them and all? But compared to the new places, they were in pillboxes before. x.x
Such huge enclosures, with all the attempting-to-be-natural landscaping, trees and little waterfalls and just sooo pretty! And the jaguars! ^_^ They looked so happy, exploring and sniffing things and I suspect they were actually looking for ways out? But they. Have room. To move! And things to climb that are actually higher than my own head! <--- *is 5' 2" or something last she checked*
And a nice big pool full of fat blue fish. The fish were the size of my head! Something-Pecu, said the plaque, I cannot remember all of it. << I fear the jaguars may try to eat these fish, however.
The tapir is in with the capybaras, which before could only be seen from the train-ride, really - they're very hard to see when they don't want to be? This time they were all gathered at the water. So cute! One of them was just determined to be drinking and kept moving away from another that was pushing at it.
Like ' Pay attention to me!' :.
' :x Drinking now'
*butt* Pay attention to me! :/
'>:x Knock it off, I'm thirsty!'
And it has its own reptile house? But with some of the small birds and everything. ^^ Tiny brilliant blue frogs, very poisonous, sharing space with a snake I couldn't see very well. Besides. The frogs were brilliantly blue and hopping. Everywhere! I counted about 7 of them. I have seen that sort of blue patterning before, but I didn't think it occured in nature.
Some other frogs, also poisnous, in a special enclosure with the birds and this plant they all needed to live off of. Or in, in some cases. And sloths and death's head cockroachs. Which is slightly gross, and I hope they're there to be fed to things. >> *prejuidiced against cockroachs* Ooooh, maybe they're there for the bats! >:)
And an anaconda. :o I turned around and saw it and this chill went through me, huuuge snake. It is one thing to be looking down into the enclosure at a snake who is about waist level and thick as my wrist. It's another to turn around and see something nearly chest-high, thick as my arm and have one of those moments of distorted perception where you think you're seeing all of something? And then it turns out that you weren't.
Ooooh, brrr. Big snake he is! Neat! ...wait.... :O Good lord he is huge! *reassesses size of the enclosure* Yeah, he needs that space. @.@
And he (she?) is sharing that space with a tree-constrictor I couldn't find, and the meanest looking turtle I have ever seen. I looked for its name, but I can't remember that now either, except that it is supposed to mean 'I kill'. Does this not rock? >:D
Visited our Florida reptiles house too. ^^ Couple of the snakes looked like they were getting ready to shed... I know the diamondback rattler, and I think the other was the cottonmouth. And, after not having anything in the kingsnake and coral snake exhibits in forever, we now have - 1 kingsnake and one plastic coral snake. Lame! >:p But I think it's there to provide comparison, so's people can see which one is safe to pick up and which isn't. ...still lame! *demands a real coral snake!*
The wolf was asleep! And the deer and the everything. It was okay, though, because I just sat for awhile and started writing somemore. Must go back just to sit in the wonderful new area by the jaguars and write. *.*
And many zoo-patrons were impressed by the lions, who were roaring! ^.^ Very loudly, one couple got startled by how loud they actually are. I got startled because I was listening to them make thier loud chuffing-noises and thinking how similiar it sounded to my cat making with the inquistive chirruping purrs. I didn't expect them to suddenly get LOUD like that! XD
