Jun. 21st, 2007 08:04 amWell, I've at least managed to narrow down things college-related? And every time I think about this I have to fight off the urge to babble madly and become completely distracted.
Meanwhile, everything is going on hold until I have found out what to do with this bird I brought in from the side of the road last night, which goes as follows:
I'm driving home from (with only partial success) trying to get my personal-time snafu cleared up. Feet away from the house, as in easy walking distance, there's a bird flapping around on the opposite side of the road. My stomach twists, I get in, take care of an immediate need and kick on the crummy outdoor shoes to go and (I believed) move the carcass of a dead bird from the road. Because I was sure in the time it took me that someone else would have hit it again.
Well, it wasn't dead. It let me pick it up, and I carried it home and into the garage, grabbed an old shoebox and a couple of shirts I'm not too attached to, and made it a nest. (With appropriate hand washing along the way)
It doesn't appear to have been hit badly, or maybe to have been hit at all - I really have no way of telling what exactly is wrong with it, other than 'nothing is visibly crushed'. And I thought, when I put it into the box, that it was a chicken.
Upon looking at it in daylight? I'm not sure it is. Might be a small hawk. So now I'm going to try the bird rescue numbers given to me by Fish & Wildlife, since when I first tried them no one answered. Hopefully, someone can help this bird and tell me what it is exactly. (If it is a chicken, won't that be embarrassing.)
ETA: 8:45, One phone call returned that has led to two new numbers - only one of which was a name mentioned to me before. So I've called that and left my number.
I suspect I should be trying to feed this bird, but I have nothing any kind of bird might eat at the moment. x.x
ETA: 8:58, Upon realizing that I'm an idiot, I changed my search on google and found at least 3 places very nearby which I'm going to check and see if I can't give this poor bird to someone who can at least tell what it eats.
ETA the Third. 10:01 I still have the bird, and having handled it more I've come to two conclusions: 1, I'm pretty sure it is a chicken, on the grounds that anything wild and able to try and run for it would have attacked me or kept running. Instead of letting me corner it and pick it up again. >.>
2. There is something metal on the left wing that looks as if the bird's already been treated for something. It may have just escaped it's pen? I know there are people around here who raise chickens. I've left it some water in a bowl, and if I can get ahold of my brother, I'll ask him if he knows anyone to whom this chicken might belong.
But right now, sleep, and returning to the college stuff with (hopefully, I didn't have much luck today did I?) a clearer head.
Incidently, Dusky seems to find the smell of probably-chicken the most interesting thing ever. I'm slightly tempted to take her into the garage to meet it, except you know. Bad idea. Amusing. But bad.
